Pair of Socks

Roman Period, 4th to 5th century.

This pair of socks were made in the 4th to 5th century, and were excavated in Egypt at the end of the 19th century. They have a divided toe and are designed to be worn with sandals.

The technique used for making these socks are commonly confused with knitting. They were made in the technique nålbindning, sometimes called knotless netting or single needle knitting – a technique closer to sewing than knitting. These socks were made using three-ply wool. Some believe that this technique was a forerunner of the faster method of knitting with two or more needles.

Par de calcetines.

Período romano, Siglos IV-V.

Este par de calcetines se realizaron entre los siglos IV y V. Se encontraron en una excavación en Egipto al final del siglo XIX. Tienen un dedo separado y se diseñaron para usar con sandalias.

La técnica usada para hacer estos calcetines se confunde normalmente con el punto. Se hicieron con una técnica llamada nailbindning, también llamada a veces punto sin nudos o de una sola aguja – una técnica más parecida a coser que a tejer. Se hicieron con una lana de tres capas. Algunos piensan que esta técnica era el antecesor de un método más rápido que hacer punto con dos o tres agujas.
